Title

Even though we have decided on our fonts for the title for our trailer we are using after effects to animate it onto a short clip of a blinking eye. We will film our main characters eye blinking. This is a mock up of how it will look as a still image which we will use at the end of our trailer to let the audience know the name of our film.

Filmworks International

This is a still of what we hope filmworks international will look like. When we have animated it the globe will be spinning and the name filmworks international will appear when it has stopped. it will also be on a black background.

Writing and producing a screenplay

To write our screen play we used a program called CELTX. This program was simple and easy to use as all we needed to do was write our dialogue into the program and say wether it was a character, dialogue, prop or scene and it would lay it out in the correct way for us. In the begining of the planning for our trailer we chose to have very little dialogue and rely heavily on action and music to set a paranormal tone. However, when it came to using Celtx we decided it would be better to include more dialogue we chose to do this using voice overs and an interview between a student at the school and the inspector.

BBFC restrictions

The British Board of Film Classifications is a board that decides on the ratings of films and therefor they control who is allowed to watch the film. for example a film with the rating 12a means that;
  • This film is suitable for those 12 and above.
  • However, those younger then 12 are allowed to view the film but only if they are accompanied by an adult.
  • Responsibility lies with the adult who is with the child and allowing the child to view the film.
Our Film 'The Aslyum' will be given a 15 rating guidelines for a 15 film are

  • The work as a whole must not endorse discriminatory language or behaviour
  • Dangerous behaviour (for example, hanging, suicide and self-harming) can be allowed provided the detail of such is low so that it can not create too much of an impression of the viewer. Abuse of weapons which are easily obtained will not be tolerated
  • Violence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury.
  • The work as a whole must not endorse discriminatory language or behaviour.

Filming Grace

Grace was played by Hayley who is part of our group for the making to the aslyum. Grace is a ghost who was killed in the 1920s she is an importnat character in our movie as she is torumenting inspector sager and trying to force him out.

These scenes were filmed in a place called the void which is below our school and consists of 4 very derelict rooms. We thought this would be a good place to film Grace as the surroundings match her personality as some one who is out of control. The lighting in the void was perfect for these scenes as they were harsh and created interesting shadows. We chose to film some of the shots from behind 'Grace' to take advantage of this effect.

In order for hayley to look scary and ghost like she wore a ripped top with fake blood smeared all over it to make it look dirty. She also wore white powder on her face to make her seem ghotsly and red lipstick that we smudged to add a 'crazed' element to her. after all she is not your average ghost.

Risk assesment

RISK = PROBABILITY x CONSEQUENCE
To make sure nothing happens that will cause harm to our actors, to ourselves or anyone else we conducted a risk assesment.
Risk assesments are carried out in a number of places such as building sites, film sets and places generally in the public domain.

After Effects

After Effects is a program which we were testing out different effects on text we might use in our trailer for our movie The Asylum.

This is the final result. I think it would work well for the trailer as the shaking effects and the blurs repesent fear and the unknown. This applies to our movie because Inspector Sager, in the begining does not know who or what is following him and causing him so much greif. We may not use this specific idea but it was invaluable to learn how to use the programs we will be editing on.

Ideas For Digital Strategy

These are some of our ideas for a digital strategy for the promotion of our film. Using more modern techniques like Twitter, Facebook and Myspace allows the characters to come alive as they themselves have the twitter and Facebook pages which that can upload pictures and videos of themselves in character. This allows a stronger connection to form between character and audience. There is a website called peteranswers.com, on here we could set up a chat with grace and other members of the cast and allow audiences to interact directly with them rather then liking pictures and videos just on Facebook.

Adorno- Culture Industry

Adorno agured that as a society we are focusing and 'obsessing' over material items and have completely distanced ourselves from 'High art' for example shakespeare , novels, plays, opera and classical music. We are now concentrating on 'low art' for example modern films and TV shows. In turn these create false needs (buying things and not thinking) Shopping channels in particular are adding to this. They apparently give the best deals and throw in 'free delivery' to the deals.

Adorno believes this leads to commodity fetishism (an obsession with objects and the new things to buy) Apple and Blackberry are the perfect example. They are the biggest sellers of gadgets of the modern day. It seems as though everyone either has an iPhone, Macbook or blackberry and this is due to their clever advertising and easy to use products.

I partially agree with Adornos Theory because i believe that as a society we are being drawn to these new shiny products because they are the latest trend

Rekki

During one of our lessons we were taken down into a place called the void under neath the school. ME and my group think this would be a really good place to possibly do some filming. It looks like the perfect place for our lead character. Dr Sager to be searching for more clues about the spirits and the patients at the Asylum.

Character Study

Synopsis

Inspector Sager is an ordinary man who lives in London with his wife and child and works as an insprector. He is currently investigating why there has been so many unexplained deaths of pupils at the Brooke House School Which was once an Asylum . Inspector Sager decides to reside at the school for a week in order to research thoroughly. Strange occurances start happening to him such as lights flicking on and off and doors slamming shut behind him. He decides to interview students in order to find out information about why this is happening. Students alert him to the fact that 'Grace' (a former pupil murdered years ago) is warning him to leave and should, immediately. He ignores their advice and carries on investigating. Grace starts torturing him and becoming increasingly violent due to the fact that he won't leave the school. Eventually Inspector Sager starts obsessing over Grace and finally comes face to face with her. Will he survive to tell the tale or will he surrender and end up like every investigator- a helpless man tortured by the ghost of Grace?

Applying Todorovs Theory

I chose to apply this latest theory to a film i recently watched. Let me in.

In this clip the state of equlibrium is the setting ( a school ) at 00:09 - 00:12 seconds
the disruption is the meeting of the two children from 00:22 - 00:29 seconds.
The recognition occurs from 00:52 - 00:53 seconds when is listening through the wall.
The attempt to repair occurs from 01:42 - 01:43 where there is the of introduction the police.
We do not see if there is a resolution during the trailer however there is a resolution in the film where in the end the girl stays around to look after and care for the boy.

Todorovs Theory

Narrative is defined as: "a chain of events in a cause-effect relationship occurring in time" - Bordwell & Thompson

Todorovs theory suggests that there are 5 stages to every film:

  • There is a state of Equilibrium - this happens at the very beginning of the film. It is where all is balanced and normal.
  • A Disruption - This follows the Equilibrium. It is where something/someone disrupts the previously calm/normal atmosphere to the film.
  • The Recognition - This is where there is a recognition that there was a disruption
  • An attempt to Repair - This is trying to repair the disruption and resolving the conflict or whatever has gone wrong
  • The Resolution - When everything has been restored.

Laura Mulvey

Mulvey Argued that the only way to change and ''annihilate'' the patriarchal hollywood was to incorporate feminist methods into the filming process.

Mulvey suggested three ''looks'' or perspectives in films the directly objectify women:

  • First 'look' - Male character and how he reacts to/judges the female character
  • second 'look' - The audience and how they see the female character on screen
  • Third 'look' - The first two 'looks' together. This allows the male audience members to see the female               characters through the eyes of other male characters on screen by relating to them, further objectifying the female character.

For example In this poster for jennifers body you as the viewer are looking at this through the eyes of a heterosexual male.

Bloodshed High Pitch

To really understand the key conventions of trailers our class split up into pairs and we each came up with a trailer for a film called Bloodshed high.

We first discussed initial ideas about what our film should be about and coming up with a basic story line. Our discussion included:

  • Coming up with an unique selling point.
  • Relevant actors and directors
  • Most important features.
  • How our trailer would look (creating a story board)
What we learnt from doing this was that trailers are extremely important in the promotion of films. That they must include a basic outline of the story with out giving clues and plot lines away.

Trailers are designed to excite us as the general public and keep us on the edge of our seats, and in the case of horror films, to frighten us into running off to the cinema to see the latest horror. We learnt how to engage the audience through camera angles and thinking about the style of music to use at different points i the trailer. This leads to the realisation that the production is vital. Nobody wants to go to the cinema expecting a hair raising horror and find themselves disappointed by the production of the film.

Analysing A Trailer

I chose to analyse Let Me In. This is a less in your face Horror movie and is an adaptation of Let The Right One In.

As you can see from the youtube bar at the bottom you are shown the title of the film very late in the trailer (2min05s) This might be because you as the viewer should not be confused or led by a title and so with it being shown last you are given a lasting impression and time to process what you just saw.

You are not introuduced to any 'big names' during the trailer however
there are credits at the end listing all producers/directors/actors etc..
The only time your concentration on the trailer is diverted is when ''From the director of cloverfield'' is on screen. This is used a a promotional tool as the movie Cloverfield is a very popular movie that made $170,764,026 at the box office.

Denotation/Connotation

Universal as a title suggests a no discriminatory global brand for all. with the star setting you expect a high budget well directed and produced film. The use of the globe also depicts exploration. The bold outlined font could mean power and stability.
the castle suggests fantasy and and fairy tale tradition. The font 'Walt disney' looks like it has been hand written, personalising the company and seems more inviting for families. The effects of the introduction mean high production value - fairy tale and happy endings.

The Meeting 2 Brief +Planning

After using the small Flip cameras we were given bigger video cameras. We were asked to plan and record another 'meeting' This time i was with two new people. We chose to do a meeting between a husband and wife ask fro a divorce.
